Driven by new technologies, the heating system has to be rebuilt completely towards a supply based on renewable energy sources. In Germany, the heat requirements of private households for heating and hot water exceed the total German electricity consumption.
Solar thermal energy can make an important contribution here - together with other, preferably renewable, heat generators such as heat pumps, combined heat and power units, fuel cells, and biomass boilers. In addition, the increasing use of regenerative gaseous fuels, such as hydrogen from power-to-gas plants, will contribute to the necessary decarbonization of the heating sector.
